Overview

This project began in 2019 after the change in federal regulation of sports gambling. The emerging online gaming scene in the U.S. was open and I saw an opportunity to refresh a long-standing brand to compete in the current market. Along with my father, Bob Dunkel, I took on the task of redesigning and rebranding our family’s sports data company in order to modernize both the process for calculating and posting data, as well as overhaul the website’s front and back end systems.

The Dunkel Index was created in 1929 by my great-grandfather, Dick Dunkel Sr. as a way of ranking high school and college football teams across the country. His numbers were syndicated through newspapers and radio stations and gained national attention. The Dunkel Index has remained family owned and operated for 92 years and continues to be one of the best data-driven sports indexes on the market.

I started by ideating new logos to represent the updated brand. I also designed wireframes and mocked up new solutions for the latest version of the Dunkel Index. One key point of the design was to integrate a final score API into our algorithms to automatically produce results, instead of calculating by hand as was the case before. Once my designs were complete we searched for a developer to help us realize our vision and were lucky enough to find Vegas Kings as a partner. Working together we launched the new Dunkel Index site in 2020.
